Książka stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czym mogą być literatura i sztuka dzisiaj, a co się z tym wiąże – również, krytyczne odniesienie do starego jak nowoczesność problemu końca sztuki wysokiej. Wychodząc z założenia, że mówienie o końcu sztuki jest uzasadnione, tylko jeśli rozumiemy ją jako prezentację tego, co idealne w formie uchwytnej dla zmysłów, w pracy próbowano spojrzeć na rolę twórczości i krytyki w naszym świecie, który nie jest już światem Idei w sensie heglowskim. Jako że dyskusja czysto teoretyczna w takim przypadku nie zawsze prowadzi do uchwytnych wniosków, autor zaproponował rozważenie wyżej wspomnianych problemów, posiłkując się przykładami dzieł Paula Celana, Samuela Becketta i Bruce’a Naumana, których praktyka pozwala, jego zdaniem, na sformułowanie pewnych szerszych wniosków dotyczących sensu tworzenia w epoce zwanej często postpostmodernistyczną.

Studenckie Koło Naukowe Kanadystów powstało w roku 2009 jako rozszerzenie działalności akademickiej prowadzonej przez Centrum Studiów Kanadyjskich przy Instytucie Kultur i Literatur Anglojęzycznych. Do założenia Koła zainspirowały nas działalność naukowa i pasja dr Eugenii Sojki, dyrektora Centrum Studiów Kanadyjskich.

Liczba członków Koła początkowo wynosiła 11 osób, jednak stale się ona powiększa. Jesteśmy młodym, ale prężnie działającym kołem naukowym, które ma już na swoim koncie wiele sukcesów, takich jak wyjazd badawczy na Uniwersytet Vancouver Island, organizacja konferencji studenckiej w Szczyrku oraz spotkanie z ambasadorem Kanady w Polsce - Jego Ekscelencją Doktorem Danielem Costello. Czlonkiem Koła Kanadystów może zostać każdy student, który pragnie rozwijać swoje zainteresowania dotyczące tematów związanych ze Studiami Kanadyjskimi i dzielić się nimi z innymi.

Koło Naukowe NeoLit powstało w roku 1996 z inspiracji pierwszego opiekuna naukowego Koła, mgra Pawła Jędrzejki (obecnie doktora nauk humanitycznych, zatrudnionego w IKiLA na stanowisku adiunkta), lecz jego formalizacja była efektem rozwijanej już wcześniej działalności dyskusyjnej, całkowicie nieformalnej. Założycielską grupę studentów i wykładowców łączyła wspólna pasja zadawania pytań i debatowania nad nimi. Początkowo nieregularne spotkania stały się wkrótce cotygodniowym rytuałem, który dał początek znakomicie dziś funkcjonującej, niejako „trzypokoleniowej” organizacji. Pierwszym poważnym wynikiem działalności naukowej NeoLitu był udział niemal wszystkich założycieli Koła w międzynarodowej konferencji naukowej "Crossing and Transgressing Borders", zorganizowanej w 1997 roku wspólnie z Bolton Intitute of Higher Education w Wielkiej Brytanii, dzięki środkom pozyskanym przez ówczesnego opiekuna koła, Pawła Jędrzejkę, w ramach konkursu wydziałowego.

Canadian Studies Centre at the University of Silesia, founded in 2000, functions within institutional structures of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures. The official launching of the Canadian Studies Programme took place on October 27, 2000, with an inaugural lecture by Prof. Nancy Burke and speeches by representatives of the Canadian Embassy (Michael Wooff) and the Head of the Polish Association for Canadian Studies. Prof. Anna Reczynska. The Centre is chaired by Dr Eugenia Sojka. Faculty members of the Institute interested in Canadian Studies are actively engaged in the activities of the Centre.

  • The academic staff and structure of the Institute:

    The Institute, which is a part of the University of Silesia’s Faculty of Philology, has the academic staff consisting of 3 full professors, 10 associate professors, 18 assistant professors, 28 lecturers and doctoral students working in 4 departments and 3 centres:

    • Department of American and Canadian Studies;
    • Department of British Culture and Literature;
    • Department of Cultural and Literary Theory;
    • Department of Post-Colonial and Travel Literatures;
    • Writing Centre (assisting students in both creative and academic writing)
    • Centre for the Study of Interactive Narratives;
    • Centre for Canadian Studies;
    • Centre for Gender Studies.
    • Studying at IECL:

    The Institute offers several 3-year BA (full time) studies, 2-year MA (full time) studies as well as extramural MA studies. The candidates must have a minimal working competence in English at B2 level.

    Each of the programmes of studies offered at the Institute includes, as core courses, the subjects that are traditionally offered in English philologies curricula, such as English as a foreign language module (at C1 and C2 levels), survey courses in English and American literatures, introductions to literary theory and linguistics and courses in history and culture of English speaking countries. As well as these, each of the programmes of studies offers specialised modules and courses which are listed below.

    International students are able to compose their individual programmes of studies by choosing components from the programmes offered at the Institute that best suit their academic interests and their needs.

    The following programmes of studies contain components which are offered to international students (the courses listed below are taught in English unless indicated otherwise):

    BA programmes of studies:

    Culture – Media – Translation (3-year BA full time studies). NB: translation modules are taught jointly in Polish and English.

    This programme offers a wide range of courses that not only improve the student’s practical command of English, but also raise his or her competence in a variety of literary and cultural subjects, including media studies and theory of communication. Added to this is a concentration on skills in translation of texts of various kinds. As part requirement for obtaining the BA diploma, students write and submit a diploma paper.

    Modules taught include: (core courses) English as a foreign language (C1, C2 levels); British and American history, contemporary British and American cultural studies; history and culture of the English speaking countries; survey modules in British and American literatures; specialised elective modules in literatures and cultures of the English speaking countries; introduction to literary theory; advanced literary and cultural theory; introduction to linguistics;

    (specialised courses) language and communication; media and new media studies; film studies; translation theory and practice (applied and literary translation); BA seminar; academic writing; information technology pertaining to editing texts.

    Culture of the English Speaking Countries (3-year BA full time studies). NB: translation modules are taught jointly in Polish and English.

    The programme offers courses that familiarise the student with the essential aspects of literary and cultural studies, e.g. theory of literature and gender studies. As part requirement for obtaining the BA diploma, students write and submit a diploma paper.

    Modules taught include: (core courses) English as a foreign language (C1, C2 levels); British and American history, contemporary British and American cultural studies; history and culture of the English speaking countries; survey modules in British and American literatures; specialised elective modules in literatures and cultures of the English speaking countries; introduction to literary theory; advanced literary and cultural theory; introduction to linguistics;

    (specialised courses) poetry and poetics; drama studies; literary prose and studies in literary narratives; descriptive grammar of the English language; applied and literary translation courses; BA seminar; academic writing; information technology pertaining to editing texts.

    Design of Interactive Entertainment and Localization of Games and Software (3-year BA full time studies). NB: several specialised courses in IT and visual and game design are taught in Polish within this programme.

    The specialization (Interactive Entertainment Design and Game and Software Localization - SPRINT-WRITE) is a new programme of studies that combines practical competence in the English language with practical competence in game design and theoretical knowledge of cultural, literary and linguistic issues. Thus, the course not only covers the field of English philology, but also prepares for a career in the game development industry. A selection of theoretical humanist modules, included in the curriculum, provide a foundation of creative ability, which is further developed through practice-oriented game design courses. Students also acquire practical, industry-specific competence in translation (game and software localization). This increases the graduate’s attractiveness as a potential employee in game development industry but also as a self-employed operator (as a translator specializing in game and software localization). The programme is completed with a BA degree.

    Modules taught include: (core courses) English as a foreign language (C1, C2 levels); British and American history, contemporary British and American cultural studies; history and culture of the English speaking countries; survey modules in British and American literatures; introduction to literary theory;

    (specialised courses) narrative theory and story-telling; introduction to linguistics; material culture; popular culture; science-fiction /detective fiction /historical fiction literary module; applied and literary translation; computer-assisted translation (CAT); localization of games and software; film theory; new media; introduction to marketing; game design and game design documentation; interpreting interactive entertainment; introduction to drawing; introduction to 2-d and 3-d graphics; screenwriting and dialogues; storyboarding; film directing and scenography; level designing and graphics lab; BA seminar; academic writing.

    MA programmes of studies:

    American and Canadian Studies for Intercultural Communications and Diplomacy (2-year full time MA studies). NB: the programme is taught entirely in English.

    The 2-year full time American and Canadian Studies for Intercultural Communications and Diplomacy programme is aimed at graduates able to communicate fluently in written and spoken English and is a study programme specialising in the U.S. and Canadian socio-cultural studies and their practical applications in international diplomacy. As part requirement for obtaining the MA diploma, students attend MA seminars and write a diploma paper on a topic of their choice related to American and/or Canadian diplomatic relations.

    Modules taught include: (core and specialised courses) American society and its institutions; rhetoric and eristic; diplomatic protocol; history and foreign policy of the USA before 1945; history and foreign policy of the USA after 1945; Canadian society and its institutions; history and foreign policy of Canada; legal systems of the USA and Canada; international relations; North American art; multicultural society (elective monographic course); international law; MA seminar and editing academic texts.

    Culture – Media – Translation (2-year MA full time studies). NB: translation courses are taught jointly in Polish and English.

    The studies in culture, media and translation are aimed at graduates in 3-year BA studies and teacher-training (language) college graduates who hold the bachelor’s diploma. Besides courses in so-called practical English, the programme includes specialist courses in, among other subjects, communication and media studies, and translation. As part requirement for obtaining the MA diploma, students attend MA seminars and write a diploma paper on a topic of their choice (within the range of translation, communication, and media studies as well as English cultures and literatures).

    Modules taught include: (core and specialised courses) English as a foreign language (C2 level); interpretations of literatures in English; cultural theory, semiotics of culture; interpreting culture (elective modules); media studies; multimedia; contrastive grammar of English and Polish; translation as a cultural phenomenon; literary and specialised translation; translation of cultural texts; IT technology pertaining to editing academic texts; MA seminar; specialised seminar.

    1. Culture of the English Speaking Countries (2-year MA full time studies). NB: translation courses are taught jointly in Polish and English.

    The 2-year full time studies in culture and literature are aimed at graduates in 3-year BA studies and teacher-training (language) college graduates who hold the bachelor’s diploma. Besides the standard courses in practical English, the programme includes specialist courses in, among other subjects, contemporary literatures in English. As part requirement for obtaining the MA diploma, students attend MA seminars and write a diploma paper on a topic of their choice (within the range of English cultures and literatures).

    Modules taught include: (core and specialised courses) English as a foreign language (C2 level); interpretations of literatures in English; analysis of cultural discourses; semiotics of culture; aspects of culture (elective modules); aspects of contemporary culture (elective modules); contrastive grammar of English and Polish; translation of cultural and literary texts; IT technology pertaining to editing academic texts; MA seminar; specialised seminar.

    1. Design of Interactive Entertainment and Localization of Games and Software (2-year MA full time studies). NB: several specialised courses in IT and visual and game design are taught in Polish within this programme.

    The studies in culture, media and translation are aimed at graduates in 3-year BA studies in Design of Interactive Entertainment and Localization of Games and Software as well as at graduates with previous experience of working in the area of game design and game studies. As part requirement for obtaining the MA diploma, students attend MA seminars and write a diploma paper on a topic of their choice).

    Modules taught include: (core and specialised courses) English as a foreign language (C2 level); interpretations of literatures in English; theory of culture; game design (4 modules); traditional game design, programming languages; aspects of media studies; game and software localization (advanced skills; 2 modules); MA seminar.

    Additionally a number of courses taught jointly with our sister Institute of English (located on the same campus) are also available for international students. Jedna z ważniejszych tez książki Marty Mamet-Michalkiewicz zawiera się w przeświadczeniu, że Księga tysiąca i jednej nocy poddawana jest procesowi niekończących się przekształceń. Autorka skupia się zatem na prześledzeniu owych przeobrażeń dzieła literackiego, natomiast w szerszym kontekście jej praca stanowi również studium badające trajektorie zmieniających się relacji pomiędzy kulturą Wschodu i Zachodu.

Although generally resented and deemed unfavourable for individuals, societies and nations, grief, grievance, and grieving, along with a complex list of epithets that could in various situations, under varying circumstances, accompany them – racial grief, political grievance, protracted grieving, chronic grief, traumatic, unresolved grievance – nevertheless occupy a notorious place in culture and its manifestations in literature, art, history, science, or politics.

The Department of American and Canadian Studies specializes in Hemispheric, Transatlantic and Transpacific research on the Americas, approaching the cultures of the dual continent as inextricably connected "communicating vessels." A thus defined research profile allows us to diagnose the dynamics of the interdependence between phenomena and processes taking occurring "within" the Americas, but also "across the oceans": between Europe and Africa and the Americas -- as well as between the Americas and Asia and Oceania.
