Visit of H.E. Ms. Leslie Scanlon, Ambassador of Canada to Poland and Jeremy Wallace, Counselor, Political and Public Affairs and Semi-Final of “Discover Canada 2019” - Nationwide Contest for Polish High School Students

H.E. Ms. Leslie Scanlon, Ambassador of Canada to Poland, and Mr. Jeremy Wallace, Counselor, Political and Public Affairs, will visit the University of Silesia on February 26th 2019.

The distinguished guests will meet with the University of Silesia authorities, including the University President (Rector), Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Kowalczyk, vice-Rectors Dr hab. Prof US Tomasz Pietrzykowski and prof. dr hab. Ryszard Koziołek, Dean of the Faculty of Philology Prof. zw. dr hab. Krzysztof Jarosz and  Vice-Deans Prof. zw. dr hab. Adam Dziadek and Dr. hab. Jolanta Latkowska.

The University of Silesia Canadianists and the organizers of the “Discover Canada 2019” contest, both at the university and high school level, will also have a chance to meet the representatives of the Canadian government.  The Ambassador will give two interactive lectures, followed by a question and answer sessions, one to the University of Silesia students, and the other to the semi-finalists of the nationwide contest. Mr. Wallace will have an additional meeting with students of the American and Canadian Studies for Intercultural Communications and Diplomacy program.

The Canadian Studies Centre extends an invitation to the University of Silesia students, and especially those representing the Faculty of Philology, to the lecture, meeting and the question and answer session with H.E. Ms. Ambassador on February 26th, 9:50am to 11:10 am.

The visit coincides with the semi-final of the 6th edition of "Discover Canada” contest which is a joint project of  Canadian Studies Centre and Department of American and Canadian Studies, Institute of English Cultures and literatures, and Karol Miarka High School [Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Miarki] in Żory. The patronage of the 2019 contest was accepted by the Minister of Education, Canadian Embassy in Poland, Polish Consulate in Toronto, Rector of the University of Silesia, President of the City of Żory, Chief Education Officer in Katowice, and the Polish Association for Canadian Studies. Close to 7000 high school students participated in the first stage of the past editions of this educational project which plays an important role in the intercultural education of Polish students  and  serves as a good example of the University of Silesia outreach educational initiatives.
