Discover Canada 2017 – 4th edition of the National Contest on Canada for High School Students

The Finals of „Discover Canada 2017” will take place in the Municipal Culture Centre in Żory in April 6th – 7th 2017.

This year’s contest examining committee consists of the representatives of the Department of American and Canadian Studies ( dr. hab. Eugenia Sojka, dr. Sabina Sweta Sen- Podstawska and mgr Rafał Madeja) and the Polish Association for Canadian Studies (dr. Tomasz Soroka from the Institute of American and Polish Diaspora Studies at the Jagiellonian University). The high school teachers from Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Miarki in Żory engaged in the project are: mgr Beata Pasierbek, mgr Beata Kurzeja, mgr Hanna Mrozek oraz mgr Wojciech Oleś.

On the first day of the contest the finalists will be taking an oral exam and will deliver a multimedia presentation on the topic „The Government of Canada’s Vision for the 150th Anniversary Of Confederation”. The best presentation will be repeated before the audience during the Award Ceremony next day. Prof. Barbara Messamore from the University of the Fraser Valley will give a lecture enitled "Canada at 150: What are we celebrating?”


The contest Discover Canada is a joint project of the Department of American and Canadian Studies, Institute of English Cultures and literatures, University of Silesia in Katowice, and Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Miarki in Żory, initiated in 2014. The patronage of the 2017 contest was accepted by the Canadian Embassy in Poland, the Polish Consulate in Toronto, the President of the University of Silesia Prof.. dr hab. Andrzej Kowalczyk, the President of the City of Żory, and the Chief Education Officer in Katowice. Fifteen students representing schools from all over Poland, selected from 979 participants in the first stage of the competition and 60 in the second stage) will be competing for such attractive prizes as the admission to the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures and the Institute of English, University of Silesia, and high financial awards funded by the President of Żory City – total of 6000 PLN. 4346 students from all over Poland participated in the four editions of the contest, many of whom decided to study at the University of Silesia, encouraged by the variety of promotional activities during the three stages of the contest.
