The Finals of „Discover Canada 2017” will take place in the Municipal Culture Centre in Żory in April 6th – 7th 2017.

This year’s contest examining committee consists of the representatives of the Department of American and Canadian Studies ( dr. hab. Eugenia Sojka, dr. Sabina Sweta Sen- Podstawska and mgr Rafał Madeja) and the Polish Association for Canadian Studies (dr. Tomasz Soroka from the Institute of American and Polish Diaspora Studies at the Jagiellonian University). The high school teachers from Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Miarki in Żory engaged in the project are: mgr Beata Pasierbek, mgr Beata Kurzeja, mgr Hanna Mrozek oraz mgr Wojciech Oleś.

The semi-final of the Nationwide Contest on Canada “Discover Canada 2017”  is taking place on February 2nd 2017, lecture hall 051.  The event will begin  at 12:00 with a lecture by Alexandra Marchel (University of Toronto /University of Warwick),  entitled: "Re-Storying Canada: Tracing the Politics of Indigenous and Settler Relations in an Age of Reconciliation."  More information on the contest can be found on the website:  http://www.mt-oka.pl/ ;  please find the semi-final program in the attachment.  Canadian Studies Centre and Department  of American and Canadian Studies cordially invite everybody to the guest lecture.

The third edition the Nationwide Contest on Canada for Polish High School Students- Discover Canada 2016 has been announced. The contest is a joint project of the American and Canadian Studies Department, Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, University of Silesia and Karol Miarka Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Żory. The patronage over the contest has been granted by the Canadian Embassy, Consulate General in Toronto, Minister of Education, University of Silesia President, Polish Association for Canadian Studies and the President of Zory City. The contest winners will be offered an admission to the English Philology Department and high financial awards. The University of Silesia co-ordinator of the contest is dr hab. Eugenia Sojka. The semifinals are held on March 12, 2015 at the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, at 12:00, lecture hall 0.3.
The event will begin with a lecture entitled “Political Satire in Canadian Television Shows” by dr Lindsay Thistle from Canadian Studies Centre, University of Trent, Canada.
50 students selected from 1022 will participate in the second stage of the Discover Canada 2015 contest, which is a joint project of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures and I Liceum Ogólnokształcące in Żory. The patronage of the contest was accepted by the Ministry of National Education, Canadian Embassy in Poland, Polish Consulate in Toronto, President of the University of Silesia Prof. zw. dr hab. Wiesław Banyś, President of the City of Żory, and the Chief Education Officer in Katowice.

Informujemy o drugiej edycji Ogólnopolskiego Konkursu Wiedzy o Kanadzie dla uczniów szkół ponadgimnazjalnych - „Discover Canada 2015”, który jest wspólną inicjatywą Zakładu Studiów Amerykańskich i Kanadyjskich przy Instytucie Kultur i Literatur Anglojęzycznych Uniwersytetu Śląskiego oraz I Liceum Ogólnokształcącego w ZSO w Żorach. Patronat nad konkursem objęli: Ambasador Kanady w Polsce, Konsul General Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej w Toronto, Rektor Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, oraz Prezydent Miasta Żory. Wśród nagród znajdują się cztery indeksy (dwa na studia w Instytucie Kultur i Literatur Anglojęzycznych, oraz dwa w Instytucie Języka Angielskiego) oraz wysokie nagrody pieniężne. Koordynatorką konkursu z ramienia Uniwersytetu Śląskiego jest dr Eugenia Sojka, kierownik Centrum Studiów Kanadyjskich.
